Fashion Film, Hussein Chalayan (2008)

The fashion film Readings, created by Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben, was shown as part of Paris Fashion Week in October 2007 – in place of a traditional catwalk show – to present Hussein Chalayan’s Spring/Summer 2008 collection to the fashion fraternity. In this project, Nick Knight and Hussein Chalayan invited SHOWstudio.com viewers to propose audio treatments for a bricolage soundtrack curated by Antony Hegarty of Antony & The Johnsons in direct response to the clothes.

This project charts the creation of readings from conception to completion, showcasing the brief and varying treatments suggested by SHOWstudio viewers for Antony Hegarty, alongside a series of interviews with Chalayan himself and the final Readings fashion film created by Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben.

In the above images the blue of tailored shorts is striking. The pantsuit with the idea of repeating the fabric in the shirt below as well as a wrapped outside the suit appeals. The imaginative construction of the clothes with use of different fabrics and textures combines both a tailored and a wrapped or flowing look that appeals to me. At around the 3 minute mark there is an a-symmetrical black overlay and I’m not sure what the fabric is, but I like it very much–at least the idea of it.

in more recent work Chalayan has teamed up with Puma & Net-A-Porter. The shoes designed for Puma are sleek and fashioned with a disc at the lacing. The collection on Pret-A-Porter feels somewhat depressing for an artist that Vogue referred to as having a “reputation for creating probably the most intellectually advanced, mesmerising performances on the international catwalk.” The theme for this collection is “higher forces”.
